Engineering graduates can now teach in Govt Schools in Karnataka

The state government’s decision to open the teaching profession in elementary and secondary schools to techies has come as a significant shock despite objections about decreasing career opportunities for individuals who study pure science and humanities. The state government has amended the Department of Primary and Secondary Education’s Cadre and Recruitment (C&R) Rules to allow engineering graduates to take the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET). The provision will be implemented beginning with the next TET test.

Because TET eligibility is required for state government school appointments, the department’s action is expected to benefit people with an engineering background. There was no provision in the previous guidelines for engineering graduates to appear for TET; we have altered that rule, by an official. Though a bachelor’s degree in education is required for teaching, department sources say engineering graduates may be excluded. Authorities are contemplating exempting engineering graduates who seek to write TET and teach in government schools from the required BEd, as per a department official source.

As per sources, the number of applicants passing TET is projected to increase starting this year since engineering graduates would find it simpler to pass topics like mathematics and science. There are now approximately 20,000 teacher openings in state government schools, with just 3,000 being appointed during the department’s two-year campaign to recruit 10,000 instructors. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the TET for 2021 has been postponed.

However, the department plans to conduct TET for 2022 shortly. As per the data, the number of individuals who qualify for the TET is quite low. The total number of candidates who took both paper 1 and paper 2 in TET 2021 was 2,31,886. Only 4,074 individuals were found to be eligible, accounting for 19% of the total.
