The United Arab Emirates has declared that it will transition to a four-and-a-half-day work week with a new weekend consisting of Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday. All federal government entities will convert to the new weekend starting January 1, 2022. The United Arab Emirates is the first country in the world to implement a national working week that is shorter than the global five-day week.
The workweek will begin on Monday and end on Friday afternoon. Every day, federal employees will labor from 7.30 a.m. until 3.30 p.m., for a total of 8.5 hours. On Friday, employees will work for 4.5 hours. On Fridays, employees will have the option of choosing flexible work or working from home. As per the announcement, Friday sermons and prayers would be held after 1.15 pm throughout the year in the UAE. Schools and universities across the UAE will also follow the new workweek. The Ministry of Education will announce the new school timings.
