Even though numerous expert organizations, including the health expert task force, have recommended that schools reopen in the first week of August, the state government has been compelled to postpone its plans owing to a dramatic spike in daily Covid cases. Sources at the Department of Primary and Secondary Education informed DH that offline courses are unlikely to restart due to an increase in Covid cases in many parts of Karnataka and adjacent states.
As a pre-senior official, I’m revealing the choice. The proposals were to restart offline lessons by reopening schools in stages beginning in the first week of August. At the moment, however, there is no such conversation taking place at the federal level. Furthermore, the officer noted that the department’s decision-making process has been hampered by continuing political developments and the absence of a council of ministers.
Before making a final decision, the different expert panels’ suggestions were intended to be considered by the Education Minister and then by the Chief Minister. The source indicated that, given the current political situation, the reopening of schools for offline sessions is unlikely. However, if the government determines to resume the schools, the officer noted, it will only be for students in grades 8 and up. In the meantime, some parent polls show that they are hesitant to send their children to school, particularly those under the age of 12.
