The Karnataka government is set to relax its position that all degree students must study Kannada for four semesters. Students who did not learn Kannada in school, students from other states and countries would be required to study Kannada for two semesters.They can choose different languages for the next two semesters after the two semesters are completed. Kannada is a four-semester course for students who have learned it in school. As per the officials, the government has yet to issue an order to this effect.
The minister of higher education, informed that the department was adopting the model of Visvesvaraya Technological University, where Kannada is taught to all students for two semesters. Students who have never studied Kananda as a language will be required to do so for two semesters. He stated that he wants all students to study Kannada. Kannada was formerly only taught as a compulsory subject in engineering and medical institutes (under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences). Other undergraduate courses did not follow it.
