Malpe Beach, a popular coastal destination in the city, has experienced an overwhelming surge in tourist arrivals over the past two weeks, as people from different districts flock to seek respite from the scorching heat. However, the influx of visitors has posed significant challenges for the life guards responsible for ensuring the safety of beachgoers.
With the imminent reopening of schools in June, large crowds have been taking advantage of the remaining days of their vacation by spending time at the beach. This sudden surge in tourist numbers has put a strain on the efforts of the life guards in managing the growing crowd.
In a recent incident that occurred on Saturday morning, a young man named Sachin (25), hailing from Chandrapur, Bengaluru, had a narrow escape from drowning, thanks to the timely intervention of Eshwar Malpe and his team of life guards. Sachin had visited the beach with five friends on Friday night, and while two of them were swimming in the sea the next morning, he was swept away by powerful waves. After approximately 10 minutes, a massive wave brought him back to the shore, gasping for breath.
Sachin’s condition was critical, and he was immediately admitted as an inpatient at Manipal Hospital for necessary medical care. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can arise due to the fluctuating weather conditions and unpredictable strength of the sea’s currents at Malpe beach.
