The Mangalore city corporation is expecting to save about 11 lakh rupees per month. The administration is planning to replace 65,870 street lamps with LED lamps for almost free. This is a part of the street light replacement project which is expected to be completed by the end of December.
Although this was initially part of smart city projects, the corporation took over the responsibility in February. The concessionaire will maintain the project for seven years by establishing a Centralized Control and Monitoring System. The corporation will pay them an amount of ₹89.6 lakh a month towards the cost of lights and maintenance.
The project concessionaires are Chatrubhave Electronics Business Solutions, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electrical Limited, and Annapurna Enterprise. The corporation commissioner said that they were paying ₹1.51 crore a month toward street energy expenditures. Besides getting the LED lamps for free, the corporation will save up to 11 lakhs a month. The energy charges will drop down to 50 lakhs a month thus saving the expenses.
The CCMS will not only help to effectively monitor the street light system but will also reduce energy consumption. It will also reduce theft and identify fused lights quickly.
The survey in 51 wards has been completed while it remains in 9 other wards. After the rains, about 1000 lights will be replaced in a day. The project is expected to be completed by December. New poles and facilities will be installed in some places. The concessionaires have acquired 6,000 LED lights to replace 300 lamps. Responding to the counselor they said that installation of new poles and earthing facilities will be done in phases. Empty poles will also be installed with LED lamps. Rural areas will be prioritized while installing the new lights. The commissioner has asked the counselor to provide the weekly schedule of light installation.
