For worshippers of Goddess Durga and Sharada, the festival season has begun in the city. The legendary 10-day Dasara celebrations will begin tomorrow at the Kudroli temple in the city’s centre. The district administration has made a Covid-19 vaccination certificate mandatory for all devotees entering the temple.
The Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple in Mangalore hosts one of the largest Dasara festivals in coastal Karnataka. The ten-day event begins with the installation of Goddess Durga’s nine idols in the beautifully decorated hall. The hall is bathed in a sea of dazzling lights.
Dasara is celebrated in Kudroli temple, which is also known as ‘Mangalore Dasara.’ It is also referred to as an alternative to the grand Mysore Dasara. Mangalore Dasara may be the only Dasara in which the nine idols of Godess Durga are worshipped on a huge scale, with millions of rupees spent. Devotees entering the hall that holds the idols of Navadurgas, Sharada, Adishakthi, and Mahaganapathy would feel as though they are entering a “darbar of gods and goddesses.” The ten-day magnificent festival culminates in the immersion of Goddess idols in the Kudroli temple’s pond. The people carrying colourful umbrellas (from Kerala), tiger and bear dancing troupes, Kalladka dolls, and the illumination of the whole 10-kilometer path of the all-night parade is a feast for the eyes that literally forces every Mangalorean out onto the street to catch a sight.
