Mangalore city has ranked fifth in Karnataka and 146th in the country as the Swaccha Sarvekshana Abhiyaan results are out. It is conducted every year for local bodies by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.
The city which saw a fall for the past three years in Swaccha Sarvekshana ranking has recovered a few places. Around 99 local bodies having a population ranging from one lac to 10 lac participated in the competition of cities. Every city was evaluated for total points of 7500.
In the survey that was conducted in 2018-19, the city bagged fifth place and was declared as the best city in the medium category that excellently handles solid waste disposal. However, after the Pachanady garbage dump landslide disaster of 2019, the city suffered a major setback.
In the 2019-20 survey, MCC did not take part. In the 2020-21 competition, the city bagged the ninth rank.
