Several pro-Kannada organisations have called for a one-day state-wide Karnataka bandh on December 31. The Chief Minister of Karnataka, has requested that the bandh be called off.
The cause for the Karnataka Bandh on December 31 is that pro-Kannada organisations have urged that the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MESactivities )’s in Karnataka be completely banned due to its alleged involvement in “anti-Karnataka and anti-Kannada activities.” After the burning of the Kannada flag in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and the defacement of the statue of Kannada liberation fighter Sangolli Rayanna in Belagavi, allegedly by MES activists, pro-Kannada organisations called for a bandh.
On Wednesday, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai appealed to pro-Kannada organisations to put off their state-wide bandh. He said the state government had already taken action against “anti-Kannada forces” and was looking into their request for a legal ban on MES.
