PM Modi announces a digital health ID card for every Indian

The Prime Minister of India launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission on Monday, which will provide citizens with a digital health ID that will hold their medical records. The launch of the digital Health ID is timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which is being celebrated by the National Health Authority.

Health ID is provided free of charge and on a voluntary basis under the NDHM. According to the government’s health data analysis, this will lead to better planning, budgeting, and execution for states and health programmes, which should result in significant cost savings. Citizens will be able to access healthcare facilities with just a few clicks. A person’s basic information and cellphone number or Aadhaar number are used to construct a Health ID. A mobile application, a Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR), and Healthcare Facilities Registries can all be used to link and see personal health records (HFR).

Over one lakh unique Health IDs have been issued as part of the National Digital Health Mission (NDHM), which was first introduced on a pilot basis on August 15th across six states and union territories. Based on the foundations laid down by the government’s Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile (JAM) trinity and other digital initiatives, PM-DHM will create a seamless online platform by providing a wide range of data, information, and infrastructure services, all while ensuring security, confidentiality, and privacy. This objective will bring uniformity to the digital health environment, similar to how the Unified Payments Interface transformed payments.

A Health ID-a unique 14-digit health identification number for each citizen that will also serve as their health account-is one of the major components of PM-DHM. The national Health ID will serve as a central repository for all of a person’s health-related data. With citizens’ approval, the health ID will allow access to and exchange of longitudinal health records. Every test, every disease, the doctors seen, the medicines taken, and the diagnosis will be detailed in this health account. This information will be extremely important because it is portable and easy to retrieve, even if the patient moves to a different location and sees a new doctor.
