Suhas L Yathiraj a silver medalist will receive a honorary degree from NITK

Suhas L Yathiraj,  who won a silver medal in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, will receive an honorary doctorate from NITK Surathkal. On Saturday, he will receive his degree during the institute’s 19th annual virtual convocation. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union minister of education, will be the principal guest, while the chairman of ISRO, will be the guest of honor, as per the director of NITK.

As per the NITK director, this is the first time an honorary degree has been awarded in the institution’s 60-year existence. The Senate had authorized it because of alumnus Suhas L Yathiraj’s outstanding accomplishment. He graduated with a BTech in computer science from the class of 2004. In the men’s singles badminton SL4 event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, he won silver. In Uttar Pradesh, he is the deputy commissioner of Gautam Buddha Nagar.

This convocation will see 1,681 candidates graduate, including 120 PhDs, 766 postgraduates, and 795 BTech undergraduates. NITK director stated, Despite the epidemic, the university has been able to complete its academic activities on time because of the Integrated Resource and Information System (IRIS), an MIS platform built in-house by academics and staff using open-source software. In 2020-21, over 92% of undergraduate students and 55% of postgraduate students were placed in significant organizations through campus placements.

The NITK director stated that final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students have already come on campus, indicating that the college has reopened entirely. The campus will reopen in stages, with the final reopening scheduled for December.
