Lectures on the Tulu script are also being offered online because of the Covid-19 epidemic. Jai Tulunad, a group campaigning for the recognition of the Tulu language, is now offering Tulu script and language courses via 120 WhatsApp groups. The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy’s petition to add the Tulu script to the Unicode Consortium character list was approved by the state government. As per Sudarshan Surathkal, president of Jai tulunadu, for the past four years, they’ve been focusing on improving the language and have launched many web initiatives.
People are becoming more interested in learning the script. There are around 40 students in each of the WhatsApp groups. More women have expressed an interest in learning Tulu. The free course lasts one month, with lectures lasting an hour each day and doubts being answered via voice mail or Google Meet sessions in the student’s preferred language. The organization has trained about 150 instructors in the last two years. At the end of the course, every student who has registered for this course must pass an examination. As per the general secretary, almost 1,000 pupils have passed the examinations.
The Tulu script committee was in charge and a software engineer claimed that a lot of work has been done in recent days. To popularise, maintain, and defend the language, Kopparige, an online dictionary, was recently created. The Tulu typeface of Mandara was launched by the Udupi MLA to standardize usage in writing. It was created on its own. Kiran Tuluve, who is also the head of the organization’s Tulu script committee, said Tulu is one of the country’s oldest Dravidian languages, with over 50 lakh Tuluvas.
