A Twitter Tulu campaign, initiated on Sunday by several Tulu associations, was supported by various politicians and the coastal public. Organizations such as ‘Jai Tulunad’ have been campaigning for the declaration of Tulu to be the official language of Kerala and Karnataka. The hashtag # TuluOfficialinKA_ KL was used in the campaign, which ran from Sunday to midnight. In favor of the initiative, over 4 lakh individuals tweeted during the day.
22 languages are recognized in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution by the Department of Official Languages. Over the years, efforts have been made to include non-listed languages under the 8th schedule.
Dakshina Kannada MP and President of the BJP tweeted the campaign in Tulu saying that, efforts and discussions are on to include Tulu in the 8th schedule. During our reign, we shall make every effort to proclaim Tulu as an official language. The former MLC tweeted that we can be all proud of Tuluvas with our own identity, our distinctive culture, and all we do.
