Affordable Covid testing kit by Mysore University Research Team

In partnership with Hyderabad-based Lorven Biologics Private Limited, the University of Mysore (UoM) has developed a self-Covid detection kit. The new Covid detection kit has an accuracy rate of over 90%, according to Mysore University’s former Vice Chancellor and a member of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), who led the team of researchers.

As it was produced by a state-run institution, the kit is likely to be economical, and the study team is presenting the new kit to the Indian Council of Medical Research for approval in emergency use (ICMR). “A barcode strip is linked to an app, which is a unique feature of the kit. The health status of the patient (whether tested positive or negative) is updated on the server as soon as the barcode is scanned, allowing regulating agencies to keep track of cases instantly. The kit was developed using “recent technologies in molecular biology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence,” according to the study team in a news statement.

This assay may be used to detect the virus in bodily fluids like sputum, nasal discharge, and saliva by anybody who suspects they have Covid symptoms, according to the statement.“The equipment may also be utilised in the home. “Detecting if a person is sick takes less than 10 minutes,” claimed the research coordinator. In answer to a question, they stated that the team was in talks with the manufacturer to keep the price of the kits as low as Rs.100/- each kit.

“During the current second wave, RT-PCR assays failed to detect infection in certain Covid patients. As a result, a kit was needed to detect all of the virus’s modified versions’’. “We’re hopeful that the kit will be able to identify the altered virus in case of following waves,” the study team stated.
