Bengaluru is one of the cities recognised by the Centre as one of India’s top 11 cycling pioneers as part of the India Cycles4Change Challenge. Each of the chosen communities will get a one-crore grant to help them expand their cycling efforts. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry had asked towns to come up with rapid ways to boost cycling in 2020, since public transportation was hampered by the spread of COVID-19. As per the MoHUA, 107 cities joined together to test, learn, and scale up various cycling-friendly projects, launching off India’s cycling revolution.
Twenty-five cities were nominated earlier this year, and the 11 cities were chosen by a jury of national and international transportation specialists. Bhuvaneshwar, Chandigarh, Nagpur, and Pimpri Chinchwad in Maharashtra, as well as Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot in Gujarat, are among the other metros on the list. Bengaluru developed on the notion of pop-up cycle lanes and established a platform, the Sustainability Mobility Agreement, to crowd-source and construct cycling neighborhoods as part of the challenge’s strategy. they had started the pop-up cycling lane when they gathered last August to discuss the issue. The pop-up bicycle lanes in Smart City have been extended.
