Mangaluru’s waste processing will power a household for 66 years. The project has been initiated by Sustainable impacts, a Bangalore based company and Hasiru Dala. They are well capable in collection, transportation and processing of both wet and dry waste. The company works along with Mother Earth Environ and Rehman Infra Ventures.

The CEO of APD earth said that 68% of the total waste was wet waste and can generate up to 8,400 kgs of gas a day. One ton of waste can generate upto 4% of gas and 6% of fertilizers. If Mangaluru City Corporation accepts the project, 50 TPD bio-CNG and organic fertilizer plants along with 15 TPD Material recovery facilities for dry waste will be set up.

The solid waste in the city can produce 3,330 kgs of organic fertilizer and a host of other revenue earning products. The solid waste in Mangaluru can lead to generate revenue and the new initiative will also enable better solid waste management.

The corporation’s initiative to manage solid waste at Panchady Solid Waste management plant had many proposals and the corporation is planning to consider the proposal of Mother Earth environ and Rehman Infra Ventures.

The bio CNG can in fact replace the LPG in commercial kitchens or can also provide a low carbon fuel in CNG vehicles.

The city corporation receives about 330 TPD of solid waste in addition to the waste received from Ullal, Bantwal and Kotekar.

The organic fertilizer will be sold to farmers hence reducing the dependence of chemical fertilizers. The current method of collecting largely mixed waste that is then processed as compost and the remainder being sent to landfill is not sustainable. The estimated capital for initial setup is 19.85 crore along with the monthly operating costs of 4.32 crore. The company CEO also told that by combining our capabilities in the collection,  transportation and sustainable processing of not only wet waste and dry waste but also the biomedical waste, hazardous waste, and e-waste. He also added that these methods will become a complete end to end solution to the city’s solid waste streams
