Mangaluru City Corporation Appoints COVID-19 Nodal Officers

Considering a surge in the COVID-19 cases in the city, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), in an attempt to effectively deal with the pandemic has appointed nodal officers for all 60 wards. A decision has been taken to furnish mobile swab collection units in all Urban Public Health Centres (UPHC).

Reporting 12,628 total active cases, the highest cases in the district belong to Mangaluru city. However, Dakshina Kannada with 915 cases and 5 deaths, has reported less than 1000 fresh cases on Tuesday.

The authorities reported that the number of containment zones in the district increased from 94 to 100 with 46 containment zones consisting of 372 cases in Mangaluru taluk itself while Bantwal taluk contained 27 such zones with 176 cases.

In an official meeting chaired on Tuesday, it was concluded that nodal officers, taking corporators of each ward into confidence, would adopt necessary measures to fight the virus in all the wards and UPHC areas in the city. All primary and secondary contacts of COVID-19 cases would be identified, made to take the RT-PCR test, stickers would be pasted outside houses declared containment zones to inform people about the same and ensure that people who have tested positive do not move about in the city.

Separate teams formed for collection of swabs in the city through mobile units would function while two home guards would man each Public Health Centre. In case UPHCs lack space, vaccination centres can be shifted to nearby schools with Asha workers from the health department and multi-purpose workers (MPW) of the MCC will be roped in to conduct door-to-door surveys to identify people with COVID-19 symptoms.

The nodal officers must undertake the task of providing required infrastructure in Public Health Centres for vaccination and collection of samples for the RT-PCR test. People visiting these centres must be provided with chairs, drinking water and pandals must be put up. There must be a demarcation separating areas for vaccination and sample collection in all the Public Health Centres.
